Edit Blog PostUpon arriving at the airport, it was a simple train ride into the city centre. Troy stood out as he was the only person in a short sleeve shirt. That soon changed as soon as we got outside of the train station.
Amsterdam is a small dense city. We walked to our hostel, checked in and had some quiet time while we worked out what to do next. There a quite a few walking and cycling tours around town and as it is so flat we decided that that was the way to go.
A walking tour around the red light district revealed quite a few interesting facts and how innovative the Dutch can be. During a period of alcohol prohibition, one shop resorted to only selling samples, rather than actual drinks; so people would sample, shot after shot, after shot. Or that the selling of alcohol in any adult entertainment venue is forbidden, but providing 4 ‘free’ drinks bends the rules just enough. Or the topless waitresses that are into glass rental; It seems you can rent a glass for an hour, and fill it as many times as you can, looking at the topless girls whilst renting a glass is no crime. Also surprising was how many chapels seem to be conveniently placed near adult services outlets.

Other facts included, that the Dutch used to love a good public hanging, the gorier the better, with even a street renamed Blood street as this is where the blood would flow or heads would roll down. Or that certain activities asked of the window girls requires a certain amount of prep time. Or even that they have these new tax auditors that have to watch how many customers each one gets and audits the girls. 25,000 sex workers live in the Netherlands, with only 1000 in Amsterdam itself. The tour guide didn’t like Troy asking when she was going to start shocking us, at the end of the tour. Sorry if you read this..
Town east bingo mesquite tx facebookWe then headed to the Pub Crawl, which was fun, but not really all that cultural. The group was 30% Aussies, but the drink provided upon entry to each club (too but for us that it was sometimes beer.), offset the expensive cost of the drinks (same cost as Dublin, and same 25ml shot problem). It was the usual get drunk quick attitude, so we got into the spirit and were happily drinking vodka mouthfuls upon each entry (or two or three). Wanting to get home relatively early, we left and headed in the wrong direction but still managed to get home.
Next morning we had intended to take a bike tour round Amsterdam, however, it was another cold and gloomy day so they didn’t get enough participants to run the tour. We still hadn’t made it into any of the infamous ‘COFFEE SHOPS” yet, so we thought we would pop in for a gander whilst we discussed what to do next. Ended up buying some bubble gum.
So we decided to have a look through one of the sex museums whilst waiting for the next tour to start. These museums are not trashy at all and are very interesting and informative…but they did also have some funny gags thrown in for some comic relief as well. Anna was able to add a few moves into her position catalogue. We ended up being so engrossed in the museum we missed our next tour timeslot and last for the day. Bugger!!!!
We decided to try the Dutch delight of their chips, the voted No.1 best frites Sign out front. We went the whole hog with the traditional mayonnaise, and raw onion. It didn’t disappoint.
We went to the Condomerie to have a look at all the interesting condoms and learn about the history of them. Whilst looking around in the store, I felt a small tug at the backpack at a few guys were stuffing around behind us, I realised that they were pick pockets, and after I took the backpack off, placed it in front of me they promptly left the store. Upon inspection of the backpack we realised that one of the clips had been undone, I was glad our backpack had multiple layers and that Anna had placed everything right at the bottom. I was surprised at how young the guys were, and how they didn’t seem European but rather American, but also how quick it could have been to be ripped off. We had had a hot tip from a friend saying that something bad happens to everyone in Amsterdam, so we weren’t that surprised. Let’s hope this was it. It definitely made us more alert.
We go home to recoup and change for the evening. Our tour guide had told us about something fun and different to do on a Tuesday night…….something called Tranny Bingo (Will explain in a min). So we thought we would squeeze in a flying visit to the Erotica museum before our bingo appointment. Anna added a few more moves to her catalogue (now more like an encyclopaedia). The last floor is trully unique but dont think photos should be posted online.
Obviously it meant Bingo ran by a tranny whose name was Windy Mills with prize’s including items normally found at an adult shop and at only 2.5euro a game what a bargain. The games included 4 corners, big lesbian (which ironically was won by a lesbian), and cover it all. Windy Mills was beautiful and very entertaining and spoke really good English. And the table service at the gay pub was brilliant. Anna didn’t win so we only stayed for one round.
We headed to Moulin Rouge, a performance that should of made us go red in the face, but the long time between performances left us yawning. 25euro each with a couple of drinks left us disappointed to say the least. Wished we had stayed at tranny bingo.
The next day meant that we had only a half day before leaving for the airport once again. We walked around quite a bit as it was raining and too wet for a bike. We walked past Anne Frank’s house and Troy tried a raw herring………….which he found delectable……..Anna was a little grossed out but hey you gotta try these things right?
Straight after heading into another shop for some gifts, Troy noticed someone enter just before we did but it didn’t look quite right, he looked like a local. Troy took the backpack off, and folded it over, carrying at the front. He seemed to glance at the backpack twice, before quickly leaving. Coincidence? I don’t think so. But it goes to how much trouble they will go to, by even entering the shop before us. Let this be a lesson to you all…… Keep all your valuables in your front pockets, and locals don’t seem to carry much luggage, so you stand our more
Eventually we started to head back to the hostel to pick up our bags and head to the train station. We were to be on the road again.

Partying in Amsterdam blew our daily budget almost two fold daily. Better try save some in the next few days.
