Coin Info
The mid-1880s, including 1884, proved to be a quiet period across the board for Morgan Silver Dollar collectors. Morgan Dollar enthusiasts who actively pursue the VAM (Leroy C. Van Allen and A. George Mallis) varieties may disagree with such an assertion, for each year there is an increasing number of noted die varieties within the Morgan Dollar series, and this helps to lend to part of the excitement over collecting this series. However, the list below only includes the most commonly collected 1884 Morgan Silver Dollar issues, almost all of which below are the common date and mintmark combinations.
The 1884 Morgan Silver Dollar was produced in four mints: Carson City, New Orleans, Philadelphia, and San Francisco. The most valuable 1884 Morgan Silver Dollar carries the 'CC' mintmark used by the Carson City Mint. It always carries a premium value because of very low production, making it the rarest 1884 Morgan Dollar. The New Orleans Mint used an 'O' and the San Francisco Mint an 'S”. The main mint in Philadelphia did not use a mintmark. Proof examples of Morgan Dollars from all years, including 1884, are rare which makes them expensive.

More than 270 million Morgan Dollars were melted pursuant to the Pittman Act of 1918, and therefore numerous issues within the series are actually far scarcer than mintage figures would suggest.
